Winter Storms on the Coast
During the winter months, coastal storms can provide some pretty exciting photo opportunities. When high tides and big swells combine, the results can be spectacular! Waves crash into the coastline with thunderous force, often shooting water 100 feet or more into the air. Watch for large waves washing back after hitting the rocks; sometimes, they’ll crash into incoming waves, producing an impressive spout of green water.
If you go, either to watch or to photograph, please take appropriate precautions. Stay much further back from the water than you think you need to, position yourself away from logs and other large debris that can be thrown around like toothpicks, and never turn your back on the ocean. Always have a quick escape plan, and listen to park rangers and others who warn you of dangers. Sneaker waves come in without warning.
These storms are exhilarating, but always put safety first!
