Battered
Much of the time when we visit the coast, the land and the sea are peacefully coexisting. The shoreline reaches his fingers towards the sea, and she washes gently over them, leaving small kisses each time she recedes.
Other times, an underlying savagery in their relationship is revealed. The sea assaults the landscape with the ferocity of a lover scorned. The landscape juts his jaw out, absorbing the blows, seemingly unfazed. In these more volatile moments, the resolve of each is exposed – the sea resolved to crumble the landscape, the landscape steadfast in his resolve to weather the beating.
This was such a day. I wondered how many other days this battle had raged; certainly there have been many. I was left with new admiration for this rocky coastline, persistent through the onslaughts. I wished them both a rapid return to peace.
