The Bomb Cyclone
A “bomb cyclone” occurs when atmospheric pressure at the center of a rotating air mass drops rapidly, often creating heavy winds and rain. These are rare weather events, typically arising in winter, so when a bomb cyclone warning was issued while I was on an October visit to southern Oregon, I was both shocked and delighted.
The 2021 bomb cyclone generated some of the largest, most powerful ocean waves I’ve ever seen. I was mesmerized by the crashing waves. When I finally retreated for the warmth of home, I was soaked in seawater mist, invigorated, exhausted, and simply thankful to have borne witness to the breathtaking energy of Mother Nature.
