Respect
If you ever need a lesson in respecting the sea, visit Cape Disappointment in the winter. When high tides and big swells combine, the results are breathtaking. Waves roll like thunder into this cove, crashing into the rocky headlands with such force that the lighthouse, 220 feet above, is obscured by their mist. Driftwood logs weighing hundreds of pounds are lifted like toothpicks and tossed about with ease. The entire rock jetty vibrates under foot with each new assault.
Keeping a safe distance, I click away, doing my best to capture the sheer power I’m experiencing. I feel small and soft and vulnerable by comparison. As I turn to leave, I salute the sea, acknowledging her dominance, admiring her tenacity, and appreciating the reminder of my place in this wild world.
